HD is the way of the future, but it is no big deal if you decide to go the cheaper (but not by a lot), standard definition route.

Although, you must note that all U.S. television broadcasts will be exclusively digital as of February 17, 2009, by order of the Federal Communications Commission.

This may cause some headaches with appliances to convert the TV signal for an older TV, but you should be pretty much safe if you get a fairly new, or brand new TV.

more like the next 2 years the changes start. US is starting the conversion to all digital in 2009 and then it just goes from there. I wouldn’t spend more than a couple hundred bucks on a tv if it’s not HD compatible. If you do get HD make sure it’s 1080i not 720

if you buy a standard def. tv that has a digital tuner you’ll be ok, also if you get cable or satelite you’ll be ok too.
getting a hd tv now might be good for long run.
but you’ll be fine with standard def. tv

No it won’t be the end of the world and prices are coming down and will continue to do so, so if you can wait then by all means do so. However, if you can afford Sky HD then I have to say the picture quality is superb, as someone who loves wildlife documentaries, I have found HD to be a revelation, and Sci-fi stuff and many other things. My next choice is whether to Blueray or not to Blueray re DVD systems in HD, and at present have put that on hold.

I guess it depends how much TV you watch, and how much you like it as to whether you wait or buy now. I thoroughly recommend the Sony Bravia (with the colour engine technology) if you want to splash out on LCD but I understand that if you wish to go to Plasma, then the Phillip’s Viera is pretty good. Good luck with your choice.
