HDMI Cable Mystery – Why are HDMI cables so expensive?

What is the difference between Professional Cable HDMI cables and those really expensive HDMI cables at the big retail stores? Is there a quality difference? Do I need to be careful of poor quality HDMI cables?

I work with HDTVs all the time too, and you’re way off. An LED TV would not need any different HDMI cable than an LCD TV because they are effectively the same, the only thing that is different is the backlighting.

Secondly, for an HDMI cable to be made, as long as it is certified, it will perform as good as any other. So they’re all the same. Monster is made better and has a lifetime warranty, but the picture wont be any different at all.

I will agree that cheap cables work just as well as the expensive ones, but if you run into a situation where your content demands a high bandwidth HDMI 1.3 to transmit all of its data completely and your cable is inferior, you will run into blocking and breakup issues.

If you plug it in and it works, great. If its blocking and freezing all over the place, you need a better cable.

this is true. i hate everytime a friend buys some expensive cable, cuz he didn’t know and it’s to late to return

Shush now. There is no need for you to loose yer temper. You say you “work with hdtv’s all the time”. I’m guessing you work for Dixons or Argos or some other “shop”. If I threw a few issues at you, regarding the differences between interlaced and progressive images, and their shortcomings/benefits. Veiwing distances regarding screen size and chroma/luminance cross talk/ jitter with DVD>blu-ray..

Wow. You’ve just redefined the concept of digital.

Maybe you should get some real expensive USB cables too, I hear the picture is friggin awesome when you connect a hdd with a Supra USB to your bloody Xbox.

It’s only $200 and it ships with a laser beam picture enhancement thingy and 16 shields.

    Works on iPods too (!).

    Duh.

    IT-IS-NOT-ANALOGUE FFS!

If you get “1 too low” you will get the same exact result as when your hdd runs some other stuff – i.e. the pic will lag, freeze or suffer from ghosting.

HDTV from your tv jack WILL get pixelated, snowy or other weird stuff, but that is ONLY because that signal is run through and analogue grid.

How hard can this basic principle of analogue vs digital be for you overconsuming idiots? Your tv does NOT come with VLC, the data is either there or it isn’t.

Why don’t you try using one of your $5 cables on a samsung 42 in LEDTV before u start talkin shit jackass…i work with hdtv’s all the time and you can see the difference on certain tv’s (not all) yea i had to put the parentheses because apparently you don’t know how to read cause i said it also depends on the HDTV…..So check yourself before you start talking sh*t loser

  9. dtsmucker

@gregbxhustle Wow. You must be a binman, because you talk garbage. The data rate has nothing to do with the eventual picture quality. And your English stinks. Try using grammar, rather than txt, if you’de like to be taken seriously. Libraries are great places of learning..Free too..

this is not completely true…it depends on ur hdtv and speed of ur cable…diff hdtv’s hav different speed rates and color input…u need to find an hdmi cable that has the specs to fit ur tv..if u get 1 too low u wnt b getting the full hd quality from ur televisioin…this will effect the sharpness and quality of ur picture..these pp just sound like there tryin 2 sell there own shit off and thats it…cause they keep hypin up there hdmi cables

  11. pppaullll

These aren’t expensive on amazon. You can get 6ft. ones for like 3 bucks. In stores they’re quite a bit though.

    I have a 1080p 46″ Bravia Z series.
Like what difference did you notice in PQ?

  21. ELITEFLEET03

of of mine was $50 the other was $18 the one that was $18 was a cheep piece of shit and was not worth the $18 i spent on it. i through the damn thing away it was useless. i have over $1200 in my ps3 and all my games why would i be a cheep bastard and get a cheep ass cable? sure if you dont have a 1080p plasma like i have it might not make a difference in how it looks. but if your a gamer like i am i can see the difference. on my ps3 i could not even use all of the audio options with the cheep 1

  22. eujeeves

  23. ELITEFLEET03
