Today’s video features a build that’s tuned for price and performance — we’re looking for a system that will glide through your toughest apps without burning through your hard-earned cash. Since no two custom rigs are alike, Paul focuses on the planning stage of a PC build. What parts can be salvaged from an older PC? Which components are most important to choose first, before planning out the rest of the system? Our build features an AMD quad-core CPU and an MSI Motherboard with built-in SATA Rev. III and USB 3.0. What parts would you choose for your performance PC? Go with the Athlon II X3 440/445, scratch the antec PSU get a corsair/ocz, and for the HDD go with the samsung spinpoint F3.

@cisco760ca Anecdotal is only so useful. Hard drives are a commodity and rate of failure is something that always happens in manufacturing. I’ve owned both Seagate, Western Digital, and Hitachi drives fail on me. I’ve also had going for 6+ years of said brands. You get what you get.

still spent quite much… compared to my build which i only 500 bucks and can run almost any game, besides very high graphics games, such as crysis.

    nice cable management!

I’m actually planning to buy one of the combo deals on ur site that comes with the Case, CPU, Motherboard, Ram, and power supply because I already have an optical drive and hard drive with XP that I’m removing from my other computer. But I wanted to ask if everything came with the copper bolts to put under the motherboard and stuff like that?

Paul FTW! Thumbs up if you agree! :)

almost $800 for all the parts mentioned aside from the drives. take out the video card and buy it at a later time, you cut it down to $650.
    Not bad.
heh ill probably copy this build. makes things easier on me lol!

This build is very similar to what I’m planning to put together, so I’m really glad I found this video! It’s the first time I’ll be building my own rig. The only thing I’ve been uncertain about is what PSU I should get; I think I’ll go ahead and get the one you featured. (I was looking at the 650watt Antec Earthwatts but I don’t know if I need that much power!) Thanks Paul!

@Georgefromaccounting Yes, it would be a bottleneck but a phenom II would be considered a bottleneck as well. You’ll only lose 5-10fps that it can fully achieve in games using that athlon II.

    @cisco760ca I still use an old 5 year old..maxtor 2–gb @7200RPM I believe it’s called? Cost a fortune at the time.
Apparently they have been bought out by Seagate so there’s little support left, and reviews state that maxtor products break down quickly, especially their 80-140gb ones. Mine works fine, but you can hear it Whiiir when you go into that Drive. 3 HDD’s, 500gb, 200gb, 160gb.

@nictherocker you got one of the lucky ones …

  12. 722egc

u should hav gottin da three hundred

  13. nictherocker

@cisco760ca I hear alot of horror stories about seagate, and I agree that western digital is probably better, but my 5 year old crappy PC has a seagate hard drive and its still working fine ;p

@RTechstudio If you have good airflow or a fan that blows in fresh air from the side pannel, you can put the fan towards the top of the case, so air will come in from your side panel fan and go into the PSU then go out back the case, its a great setup :)

Man I want this guy to build me an affordable gaming pc.

  16. TheFatal05

    you look like a fuck

Stock cooler, and a Blu Ray Drive? Personally I would of spent the Blu Ray money on a better video card (gtx 460), and atleast a coolermaster v8.

  18. dalekdestoryer

does anyone know if a pci-e x16 (2.1) card will work on a 2.0 slot on my motherboard?

  19. Georgefromaccounting

Hey, may somebody please reply. Would the amd athlon x4 630 be a bottleneck for a radeon 5850?? Plz reply.

  20. daniel2210123

so i dont need a network card?

  21. aschris87

the lack of L3 on that cpu will make it really slugish best bet is to pick up a phenom iix2 550 be or 555 be and you have a chance to unlock it to 4 cores but most of the time it runs on 3 cores…

  22. aschris87

@TMNoob3 yes your right its in the middle of the 5830 and 5850.

  23. TMNoob3

    @teddy405139
Fuck that! GTX 460 beats the 5770 AND 5830

@RTechstudio Many cases have mounts that allow you to flip the PSU if you want, just remember to ask yourself some key questions:
If the fan points down, is there a gap large enough to allow airflow? Are there vents beneath the PSU mount? Will the PC be on the floor sucking in dust? (Keep your PC off the floor!)
Will all the PSU cables reach the mobo/drive connectors?
How many intake/exhaust fans do I have? (try to keep about the same number)
If you plan ahead you should be good to go! =D
