Star Trek: “The Doomsday Machine” (Part 2 of 8)

This video is my “reimagining” of the visual effects from the classic 1967 “Star Trek” episode “The Doomsday Machine”. I am the sole creator of all of the models and images you see in the revised visual effects sequences. I started this project way back in 2005, long before Paramount and CBS Home Video got the bright idea in their heads to remaster the original series in high definition and with new CGI effects. Well, that project, which involved 79 episodes (eighty if you count “The Cage” pilot episode) has started and finished (and they did a great job!) in the time it’s taken me to get not quite halfway through one episode. Admittedly, I picked what is arguably the most effects-heavy episode in the original series, and they had a small platoon of people working around the clock, whereas I’m one amateur hobbyist working in his scattered free time… but still–five years??! So! I hope you enjoy my take on part 2 of this classic episode of “Star Trek”. You can find part 1 by following this link: www.youtube.com You can find a test version of part 3 by following this link: www.youtube.com Hopefully the final version of part 3 and parts 4 through 8 will see the light of day in 2010! Visit my website at www.scottgammans.com to watch “work in progress” videos as I post them on my blog, and thanks in advance for your feedback! PLEASE NOTE This presentation is not endorsed by CBS Studios Inc. or Paramount Pictures Corporation and should not be confused with the official Star

This episode is in my top 5 of the original series!

“Bones… you ever hear of a Doomsday machine?”

    “No, I’m a doctor not a mechanic!”

    LOL love that line :)

@mierpaul My guess is after he realized what he did, he pretty much cleaned out the liquor cabinet!

This is BREATHTAKINGLY good. Kudos, cubed!

I’ve always had two question about this episode:

First, could Fred Saberhagen’s “Berserkers” series have been an inspiration (along with Moby Dick, of course)?

Second, would it have made a difference if the Planet-Killer’s anti-proton beam had been even slightly impure…?

Matt Decker looks more like an alcoholic after a binge.

Shattered Universe for the ps/2 did a good job recreating this episode along with many others. I also think George Takei and Walter Koenig played their roles perfectly.

  9. Tokopol

i liked the old planet killer, it was a little less cheesy looking… believe it or not

Is this new Youtube format screwing anyone else? Every so often the page sticks, it doesn’t freeze it just becomes stuck one one page and none of the icons work, neither does the refresh button or the back button! The audio comes through, but the page stays the same!

@photonicus Also agreed! Windom himself reportedly once said “yeah, I kicked butt in that episode, didn’t I?” Love it!

  12. photonicus

    Agreed!Best mental breakdown scene ever.

  13. electricalsemen

William Windom gave the best guest performance in the entire series. Just look how well he conveys haunted torment.

Something that I had forgotten about this episode until now. When they went looking for the auxilliary control room, it looks like they almost walked past it when they found the Commodore.

That is amazing! I have seen the other videos of just the Enterprise. Nice to see where they originate from. Your labor is most appreciated and I anxiously await the rest!

    Well done Professor!

I have watched your work over the years, and appreciate the amount of time you have invested in this project. Your efforts are highly respectable.
    Thank you from a fan.

@CJCA915: That would take a lot more characters than I can spare in a YouTube reply! When this project is finished I’ll probably write a “making of” post at my blog, so click through on my profile to my website and bookmark it for, oh, June 2010 or so!

Meanwhile though, I’ll give you the Reader’s Digest version: The Constellation started as a clone of my Enterprise model, but with modeled damage (including exposed girders and decks) and turbulence bump textures for the hull crumpling damage.

  21. CJCA915

How did you do the damage, that’s something I am lacking on how to do.

  22. FLAME4564

np ^^ mabey Paramount could use a good person like u i mean i love the way u’ve designed the planet killer aswell as the wrecked connie.

  23. PrfMoriarty

I agree! LOL! I’ve learned not to make any promises or estimates on when I’ll be finished, but I’m working on the next parts of Act II right now and hope to have more to share in the coming weeks. Thanks for stopping by!

  24. FLAME4564

we really need more parts of this.

  25. FLAME4564
