If I’m planning to burn my footage to standard-DVD’s for distribution purposes, am I better off filming in Standard-Definition rather than HD? (my camcorder has this option) Quality is my main concern, which route would look the best?? Also, any special instructions when burning HD content to standard-dvd? Thank You.

Do some tests – try it both ways and see how you like it. Its hard to say which will turn out better, as there is WAY more to it than just resolution… the optics are the same, but the codecs are different – very different. Transcoding HD may yield better/worse/same results as recording in SD… the only way to tell is to film the same types of scenes both ways and compare the results.
If your recording onto miniDV, always record in HighDef. You can transfer it to the computer as standard definition and In my experience it looks HEAPS better… mainly the color. ALSO it means that your master copy is in HighDef so you can do whatever you want with it later. I do all my filming this way and its great!
