Some tv channels display broadcasts at different bitrate and different digital formats, and you can notice this with different channels, some being clearer on hdtv than others.
All in all though, a 46inch hdtv should scale an sdtv transmission well with the aid of the tv’s built in sreen correction technologies and should automatically adjust to its screen size and get the best quality out each channel as possible, whether using an external freeview box, sky digibox, cable or built in freeview.
I would guess that SD cable would look like crap on a set as big as 46 inch. If you get a large HD set, you really should also get HD service, either by cable, satellite or antenna.
The quality will vary from channel to channel
